I am Eduardo Abarca. I have spent my summer in Colombia for the past three months. During this time I have volunteered, lived and spent time with many people here from all walks of life. My friend and roommate René is from Venezuela and is seeking humanitarian asylum in the USA. René’s treacherous journey will take him North where he will face many obstacles and will need support for his trip along the way.
Driven out of their homeland by deep economic, environmental, or political crisis many Venezuelans are settling elsewhere in Latin America. René has been living in Colombia for the past five years making a life for himself. However, the pandemic has significantly exacerbated the difficulties refugees have to face in other countries. Lockdowns crippled these countries' economies. This has caused him, and many like him, to consider seeking asylum elsewhere.
