To date, an estimated 24 million Americans are unemployed and battling housing insecurity. An estimated 9 to 17 million children live in a household in which the children are not eating enough because the household can't afford it. This is the direct result of the coronavirus pandemic's devastating impact on the U.S. While our elected officials are golfing and getting their hair done, thousands of Americans are still without the federal unemployment benefits they need to maintain basic standards of living.

Sadly, though not at all surprisingly, the pandemic has been hardest on people of color. The powers that be have not proven themselves capable of showing genuine concern for the situation, choosing instead to prioritize the economy and "getting back to business" over the lives of those most likely to be at the mercy of the coronavirus. These are circumstances no one in this country should have to face, but it is our current reality.

The long-term solution may be to seek out and vote for public servants whose platforms and ethics align with the best interest of society at-large so the country doesn't find itself in a similar situation in the future. Until that magical day, we can all do something for our communities now.

The #URLIFEMATTERS fundraiser aims to help as many vulnerable families as possible maintain a quality standard of living in these uncertain times. That includes financial aid for rent and utilities, healthy food to eat and supplies that make learning and working from home less worrisome. Funds raised will also alleviate the stress of the holiday season for families facing financial hardship.

The gravity of this situation is more than any of us can manage, but I do believe that every bit of concern, backed by quick, tangible solutions in the form of cold, hard cash, is a step in the right direction. Any contribution is greatly appreciated. As a token of appreciation, top donors will receive a special gift. :)

To apply or to nominate a deserving family for #URLIFEMATTERS aid, please send an email of 300 words or less describing the need and how the funds would be used. Include your full name and an email address or telephone number where you can best be reached for further instruction.

Many, many thanks!
