Kenya internship

Hello everyone, my name is Brianna Armendariz. I am a current senior at CSU Bakersfield finishing my human biological sciences degree. As you may read, I am pursuing a career as a physician assistant. In high school I worked as a lifeguard for 4 years, and learned that I appreciate working with the public and as part of a team to deliver care. From a young age, I was always interested in science and in college, that grew to an interest in medicine. Through my shadowing experiences, I saw that PAs could provide excellent autonomous care to patients, work as an integral part of a team, and have the opportunity to work in different areas of medicine throughout their career. For me, being a PA aligns perfectly with what I am looking for in a medical career. I appreciate the patient-centered nature of the role and the opportunities to provide healthcare to my community.

If you aren’t aware, applying to PA schools in the United States requires a vigorous resume, educational stats that are competitive among my peers and a two step admissions process that includes an interview panel. Applicant resumes are expected to demonstrate paid and unpaid patient care hours, shadowing of healthcare professionals, volunteering experience, letters of recommendations, extracurriculars, and an above average gpa. I have been on a very long but rewarding journey since I decided to become a physician assistant and I am very excited to see where my career takes me. This internship to Kenya is one of the most profound opportunities I have been granted since starting my undergraduate degree. The program will allow me to indulge in the beauty and culture of south east Africa, create a hands on opportunity for my skill set, and I will have the chance to provide medical relief to the children and families of Kenya. Volunteering abroad will allow me to gain new skills and experiences that will be valuable for personal and professional growth.

I will be interning at the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital in Kenya, Mombasa, Africa for over 3 weeks from August 8 to August 31, 2024. I will be placed with physicians and physician assistants alike in a very busy, overcrowded, and under resourced hospital that does not have the level of structure and organization that is expected in Western hospitals, giving me the opportunity to learn the processes of non western medicine and help communities beyond my own.

I appreciate you for visiting my page and any donations to the cause.
