Hi, my name is Kathleen.
My family has been proud members of this community since 1988, when we moved to the small hamlet of Hornings Mills. From the scenic countryside to the incredible local events, Dufferin County is truly one of the best places to live, work, and raise a family. I feel so fortunate to now be at a stage in my life where I can give back, donating my time to local non-profit charities — especially the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 220 Shelburne, which supports so many in our community.
In late November, our family experienced a devastating fire that destroyed our shop/garage. We were at a complete loss. The building housed the firewood that heats our home through the winter months, along with every imaginable tool and piece of equipment we rely on for maintaining our home and property.
Our most urgent concern was finding a way to safely store firewood so we could continue heating our home. By the grace of one incredible friend — who generously donated both materials and time — a temporary structure was built within days. Thanks to that kindness, our most immediate worry was eased.
Now, as we begin to see light at the end of winter, we’re facing the larger and ongoing challenges: cleanup, debris removal, and the replacement of tools and essential equipment. The estimates and bills feel never-ending, and the financial strain continues to grow.
The property belongs to my mother, Ruth, who has been unable to work for health reasons for several years. Unfortunately, there was no insurance coverage on the property, leaving us to shoulder the full weight of this loss.
Those who know us would describe Ruth and me as proud and independent women. Asking for help does not come easily. When a kind-hearted member of the Shelburne Legion approached me about hosting a fundraiser dart tournament at the branch for our family, I was overwhelmed by the generosity. Several friends and community members also encouraged us to start this GoFundMe.
As the expenses continue to mount, we have decided to take their advice and reach out to the community we love so much.
If you are able to donate — in any amount — to help our family rebuild and recover from this loss, we are deeply grateful. Your kindness, support, and generosity mean more to us than words can express.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you. ❤️
