One day, the hot water tank in my tiny 2 bedroom house sprung a leak, and because I was behind in the rent, the landlord felt he didn’t have to come fix it right away. We were without hot water for over two weeks. We had to take showers at the local YMCA and boil water to wash dishes. I had never experienced a landlord who was so cold and heartless, but I also knew that he was in violation of landlord/tenant expectations, regardless of my being behind in the rent.

I called code enforcement. Upon inspection of the entire house, it was determined that there were 17 violations in the home, including black mold around the windows and underneath the house and a faulty electric outlet that would have eventually caused a fire. It was suggested that we move ASAP.

I was driving for Uber Eats to supplement my income, but then our car broke down. I was told it would be at the very least $2k to repair it temporarily and $4k to keep it running for the next year or so. Since it was over 20 years old I opted to sell it for parts.

I am a home-based network marketer who markets travel, so I am a travel business owner. I am doing what I can to support my family.

Before the loss of our home we were all working toward moving to a better neighborhood and having a more stable life. But after a sudden job loss and loss of extra income and then a few other unexpected financial expenses, our savings disappeared faster than we could replace it. Before we knew it, there was nothing left. And that is how we got behind in the rent.

Without any money saved up and already behind in the rent, we found ourselves facing eviction with nowhere to go. We went to a local motel that was somewhat affordable, clean, and in a good area.

So now we have no home, very little income, and no car. Some friends, family, and our church have been helping, but we can’t continue to burden them.

Right now, my family needs help. We are struggling to pay for the hotel room. We need to purchase a good used car, be able to buy food and apply for stable, affordable housing.

We are looking forward to the day when we each can sleep in our own beds, not live out of a suitcase and can eat food that is not primarily microwave, cereal and sandwiches.

We just want to start living normal again and be stable.
