Save Our Neighborhood

We, the residents of a small niche of NE Seattle, are a middle-class neighborhood that includes the public park Dahl Field, small businesses and our homes. University Prep, an elite private middle and high school, monopolizes the park and our streets. If you look along two long blocks wrapping Dahl Field from 75th to 82nd Street there are lines of bumper-to-bumper University Prep attendees’ vehicles. During events it is even worse. Our elderly neighbors, walking with canes, end up lugging their groceries for a few blocks up and down a hill, as they cannot find parking near their homes. A neighbor who jogs and a child who runs around the field are asked to move and not disturb University Prep’s PE activities.

But that’s not enough for this wealthy school with a tuition of $36,000 per year. It assumes the public infrastructure is its own property to use as it wants. University Prep now plans to build a new campus three to four stories high, nearly the size of a football field, among our homes. University Prep claims this new building is intended for only 180 new high school students, though its plan size suggests it will likely add many more And yet, the plan includes only 15 new parking spaces.

Our community prides itself on being neighborly and caring. We are happy to help local businesses thrive. But University Prep does not contribute back to the neighborhood. Its staff and students come from the East Side, Queen Anne, and all over metro Seattle, while our streets and our park have come, in effect, University Prep’s own private property. Our community has one student, as far as we know, who attends University Prep.

If our kids cannot play in our public park, if we cannot park on our streets, it we have to fight traffic every day, all in the name of one elite school, then our neighborhood is not our neighborhood anymore. But we live here. It is ours.

If you feel this injustice, please help us raise funds for legal fees so we can  fight for our neighborhood.

Ravenwood United is appealing SDCI's decision, asking that neighborhood concerns be considered. We are asking that SDCI require a better plan for parking all those additional cars and that the building be modified to respect the privacy of nearby homes and character of the neighborhood. For details, see Ravenwood United email updates. This is happening fast! The hearing will take place within the coming month and we are scrambling to prepare. We need help with legal fees, filing fees, witness fees, and other costs associated with our appeal. Please help by contributing what you can.
