An Annual Meeting Of Faith, Friendship, And Fierce Compassion ✨
This December — just before Christmas — a group of Jesuits from across the country will return to the U.S.–Mexico border to join Battalion Search and Rescue (BSAR) for a multi-day mission of searching, prayer, and solidarity in the desert ☀️.
Last year, this team joined BSAR deep in the Sonoran Desert — a three-day expedition that uncovered eight separate migrant death sites ️ and ended with a Mass under the stars ✝️.
It was a rare and powerful joining of forces: Jesuits, lay volunteers, and humanitarian searchers united by faith and action.
Read about last year’s mission:
This year, they’re coming to the Chihuahuan Desert west of El Paso, where BSAR continues its work documenting and advocating for the recovery of those who never finished their journey.
Together, we’ll search for two days, visit with local allies and supporters, and hold Masses in the open desert — honoring those lost, and those still traveling.

A Partnership Years in the Making
I first met Jaret Ornelas, SJ, years ago when he was working with the Kino Border Initiative in Nogales. A family had come in seeking assistance in searching for their missing relative who had disappeared in the desert. Jaret called several humanitarian groups for help — and Battalion was the only one that called him back.
Since then, we’ve been fast friends and field partners.
Jaret is an incredible hiker, a strong leader, and a steady voice in the wilderness.
He’s been part of our search missions for several years now, helping bridge faith communities and humanitarian responders.
This December, we’ll reunite in El Paso, joined by some new Jesuit volunteers and our local warrior searchers.

Why We’re Raising Funds
While the Jesuits will stay at the Encuentro Project House in El Paso, there are still significant shared costs:
✈️ Travel to and from El Paso
Food and logistics during the multi-day mission
⛽ Fuel, field supplies, and support vehicles
Coordination for local shuttles (so they don’t need to rent a big van this year)
We want to make it as easy as possible for them to keep coming back — to keep walking with us, honoring the fallen and supporting the living in the borderlands.

❤️ Help Us Keep The Tradition Alive
This is becoming an annual meeting of faith and service ✊ — people of conscience coming together in the desert to say: No one is forgotten.
Your donation helps keep that commitment alive.
Every dollar helps — whether it covers a meal, a tank of gas, or a night’s stay.
Every share spreads the word about a different kind of border mission — one grounded in mercy, not militarization.
Thank you for helping us keep the faith — and the search — alive.
