On the 5th of June there was a 6.0 magnitude earthquake in Sabah, Malaysia. The quake was felt across the state, but the location that bore the worst outcome was on Mount Kinabalu, the highest mountain in South East Asia, standing 4095 metres tall. Boulders fell from its peak and rockfall destroyed pathways out.
Local mountain guides stepped up where government rescue missions could not, and guided 105 climbers back down to safety through a perilous journey. The guides were fit, adept and skillful on the mountain. Amidst ongoing aftershocks, tremors, and rock falls, they stayed with slow moving climbers, some guides carrying injured climbers down, until everyone who had survived the initial quake reached the base of the mountain.
The Mountain is now unsafe and its tracks closed indefinitely. The mountain guides have lost their livelihood. The average wage of a guide is between RM500- RM 1500 per month (AUSD 170- AUSD500). They live a simple life on this wage, some farming as well to make ends meet. Now this income is lost.
They put in enourmous efforts and risked their own lives to save others. Let's now do something to help them live theirs.
The funds collected will go the Persatuan Malim Gunung Kinabalu (Mount Kinabalu Guide Association).
