Dignity instead of tin shacks: Let's lift 800 people out of poverty
Let's work together to restore a sense of dignity
For most of us, “home” means safety, peace, and warmth.
For around 600–800 people in the Gergesenon home for people with disabilities in Addis Ababa, it means something else: an overcrowded tin shack.
In 2025, we—a small team from the Lake Constance region—visited the site ourselves. Some of us have roots in Ethiopia, others are friends who want to help where help is urgently needed.What we saw there has stayed with us ever since.
The reality on the ground—and why we must act
Imagine a room measuring around 70–80 m². Now imagine over 70 people in it. People with intellectual disabilities who actually need protection, peace, and care.
We stood in front of six-story bunk beds, crammed together, with no room to breathe.
The air is heavy. The confinement is oppressive. Providing care under these conditions? Almost impossible. It's not just a lack of space. It's a lack of dignity.
The first step has been taken – but now there is a threat of stagnation
Thanks to the Dabo e.V. association and other supporters, around CHF 100,000 (usd 125K usd / 107K Euro) has already been invested. The shell of a new building has been constructed – the foundations have been laid.
But now the money has run out. If we don't intervene, the building will remain half-finished and the people will remain in the tin shacks.
Our goal
In order for the first two floors to be ready for occupancy and for the 800 residents to move into safe, clean rooms, we need: → 60,000 CHF / 65,000 EURO / 75'000 USD
This sum is sufficient to complete the most urgent construction work and fundamentally change living conditions.

Lasst uns gemeinsam ein Stück Würde zurückgeben
Für die meisten von uns bedeutet „Zuhause“ Sicherheit, Ruhe und Wärme.
Für rund 600–800 Menschen im Behindertenheim Gergesenon in Addis Abeba bedeutet es etwas anderes: Eine überfüllte Blechhütte.
2025 waren wir – ein kleines Team aus der Bodenseeregion – selbst vor Ort. Einige von uns haben Wurzeln in Äthiopien, andere sind Freunde, die helfen möchten, wo Hilfe dringend gebraucht wird.
Was wir dort gesehen haben, hat uns nicht mehr losgelassen.
Die Realität vor Ort – und warum wir handeln müssen
Stellt euch einen Raum vor, etwa 70–80 m² gross. Und jetzt stellt euch darin über 70 Menschen vor. Menschen mit geistigen Behinderungen, die eigentlich Schutz, Ruhe und Pflege brauchen.
Wir standen vor sechsstöckigen Stockbetten, eng an eng, ohne Platz zum Atmen.
Die Luft ist schwer. Die Enge ist erdrückend. Pflege unter diesen Bedingungen? Fast unmöglich. Es ist nicht nur ein Mangel an Platz. Es ist ein Mangel an Würde.
Der Anfang ist gemacht – doch jetzt droht der Stillstand
Dank dem Verein Dabo e.V. und weiteren Unterstützern wurden bereits ca. 100'000 CHF investiert. Der Rohbau eines neuen Gebäudes steht – das Fundament ist gelegt.
Doch jetzt ist das Geld aufgebraucht. Wenn wir nicht eingreifen, bleibt das Gebäude halbfertig, und die Menschen bleiben in den Blechhütten zurück.
Unser Ziel
Damit die ersten zwei Stockwerke bezugsbereit werden und die 800 Bewohner in sichere, saubere Räume umziehen können, brauchen wir: → 60.000 CHF
Diese Summe reicht aus, um die dringendsten Bauarbeiten abzuschliessen und die Lebensbedingungen grundlegend zu verändern.
