Our beloved colleague Dr Kingumbu Kasanzi, widely known as King, Specialty Doctor in Walsall Child and Adolescent mental health services, passed away on the 27th February 2021 following intensive care unit admission with COVID-19.
King trained in Black Country Psychiatry rotation (West Midlands and joined Walsall Child and Adolescent Mental health team in 2018 initially as core trainee and then as a specialty doctor. King was highly respected, esteemed and well-liked by his colleagues, patients and families alike. He was very hardworking, always willing to go extra mile for the patients and his team.
Throughout the lockdown last year he worked from the clinic base and continued to support the most vulnerable children, young people and adults suffering with mental health crisis. He was instrumental in keeping the morale of the team high in the testing times that we have all faced.
He was fun to work with as he would always have a smile on his face. He was a great friend and colleague. He was true and devoted family man and fondly spoke of his children, wife and extended family in Africa.
We are all aware that COVID poses a higher risk to people who are BAME. King was diagnosed with lymphoma in Nov 2020 and on the day he was given his diagnosis, he still came to work like a true NHS soldier and continued with his clinic.
His bravery and strength of character was a testament to his dedication to the young patients and their families.
He started the chemotherapy and was responding well till early January 2021 when he was hospitalised with complications of the treatment. Tragically there, he contracted Covid 19. He was intubated and was in ICU till his death on the 27th Feb 2021.
His passing is shattering to all of his colleagues, but even more so to his wife and four children who now have to deal with both the trauma of bereavement and with the financial burden it now places on them. King was the main bread winner for his family. All four of his children are aged under 14 years. King worked hard to support his family to provide for all their needs especially education and wellbeing.
His friends and colleagues were constantly hoping that he would beat the odds and survive this disease, but sadly that did not happen. We would like to repay the generosity that King showed in the testing times to the most vulnerable group of the society the young people and children. We want to embody his work, ethics and commitment and want to help his family through this difficult time.
If you have known King in your working life or if you just want to help and feel that you would be able to contribute to the wellbeing and financial security of his wife and children we would urge you share this and consider donating whatever you feel appropriate. It will mean a lot to his family and his friends and colleagues. King may have gone too soon but he will never be forgotten.
