Wrenleigh’s Hope for Hydrops

Donation protected
Skylar was originally being seen at an OB in Goldsboro up until about 32 weeks. After several red flags such as concerns being dismissed and an incomplete anatomy scan, she switched her care to a hospital 45 minutes away but we are so thankful she did!

Last Monday (October 21st) she had a regular scheduled OB appointment and anatomy scan since the original was incomplete. They were in the ultrasound room for about 2 hours and had doctors/ultrasound techs coming in and out. We knew something wasn’t right, but no one was saying anything. Finally a doctor came in and informed them that Skylar had a high amount of amniotic fluid, and Wrenleigh had Hydrops. Hydrops is defined as abnormal accumulation of fluid in two or more fetal compartments. Those being Wren’s lungs and abdomen. From there they were told that she needed to be induced that night.

Skylar labored for 50+ long hours and went through several bags of pitocin. Wrenleigh was showing signs of distress and so was Skylar. Once Wren was out she was not breathing. The NICU team rushed her off and mom wasn’t able to see her for several hours because she ended up hemorrhaging and needed a blood transfusion. We am certain that if they would not have been at the hospital they are, Wren and Skylar would not be here right now.

We may never really know the cause of Wren’s hydrops. It could be from Skylar’s high amniotic fluid, an infection she had at some point, an infection Wren had at some point, or Wrenleigh’s potential Down Syndrome. The chances of babies surviving hydrops is about 20% if it is caught while in the womb. Only about half of those babies will survive outside of the womb. Wrenleigh has already shown just how strong she is by beating the odds. She is such a little fighter.

Wrenleigh has been making leaps and bounds since night one. She was able to be extubated after less than 12 hours and moved up to a CPAP. From there, it was about a day or two until she was able to get a big girl cannula! Her arterial monitor was taken out along with her IV. She is doing a great job monitoring her own temperature and eating lots! She doesn’t skip a meal! She still has to have a feeding tube because she is on high flow oxygen, but she is weaning well and will hopefully get a bottle soon!  She has been able to be off of LED lights as they are monitoring her biliruben levels. Her echo came back showing that her pressures in her heart have normalized but she has an ASD they will keep an eye on as years pass. Now they’re trying to get her little lungs to work on their own.

With that being said, there is no timeline on how long she will be in the NICU. Will and Skylar have been staying at the Ronald McDonald House in Greenville and spend most of their day at the hospital talking with doctors and being with Wrenleigh. Any donation to help them with fuel/meal/every day need expenses would be greatly appreciated as they still travel back to Goldsboro to get things as needed. This isn’t how they imagined things going but they’re handing it so well! Any donation to help with the stress of everything will be SO appreciated.

If you cannot donate please pray! God has been so good throughout all of this.
