As someone with autism and ADHD, sitting still is difficult, so I turned to crocheting as a way to fidget. Recently, I attended the Refuge Ruckus, a fundraiser for Kaleb House—an incredible ministry that rescues and restores children and families from trafficking and exploitation and is building a home for their long-term care and healing. Our family has supported Kaleb House for years, but I felt called to do more—something personal that would show each child they are seen, valued, and loved. That’s when Wrapped in Love was born. Suddenly, my fidgeting had a purpose: to ensure that every child arriving at Kaleb House finds a handmade blanket waiting in their room, complete with a sewn-on tag that reads, “Handmade with love for _________.” Each child will be able to write their name on their blanket and say, “That’s mine. It was made just for me. Somebody out there loves me.” And because each child is unique, every blanket will be too—no two will ever be the same.
The therapeutic value of a blanket cannot be overstated. How often do we reach for one when we’re sick, cold, or overwhelmed? A blanket offers comfort, security, and calm. For children who are not comfortable with touch, it can gently mimic the pressure of a hug, helping regulate the nervous system and ease them out of “fight or flight.” A handmade blanket, in particular, communicates care in a quiet, wordless way.
Your donation helps us bring comfort and love to children who need it most. Every dollar goes directly toward yarn and supplies to create these special blankets. My husband, Matt, and I will personally cover the cost of shipping the blankets to Kaleb House, ensuring that your entire gift is used to place a handmade blanket around a child in desperate need of love and compassion.
