Worldwide Vets: From OSU to Chimfunshi
Donation protected
To my friends, family, and everyone kind enough to read this,
I am excited to share that I have been awarded a career development grant through Ohio State to volunteer with an organization called Worldwide Vets. This 14-day project in Zambia, Africa will allow me to work hands-on with some of our planet’s most exotic animals including monkeys and chimpanzees. I will be working alongside conservationists studying animal behavior and applying the findings to help improve the lives of these magnificent creatures, both in captivity and in the wild. This grant is an amazing first step in my journey to Africa, and I am asking you to help me move forward with this adventure.
If you don’t know my story, my passion for animal behavior and wildlife conservation began almost five years ago. In October of 2014, I started working for Emory University’s primate research center, where my work focused on the behavior and social hierarchies of apes and monkeys. The knowledge I gained from working with these intelligent animals has instilled in me a passion for making a positive impact in the world around me. I was fortunate enough to return to OSU to further my career in research as a full-time Lab Animal Technician and a part-time student majoring in Animal Sciences. This opportunity with Worldwide vets will be a once-in-a-lifetime educational experience; and it will allow me to gain more knowledge on how we, as humans, can provide our wildlife with the resources they need to survive. Starting with the animals at Chimfunshi (most of which have been rescued from poachers, zoos unfit for primate care, or other harmful situations), I hope to one day make a significant impact by saving our wildlife from horrific fates that lead to the endangerment of many species.
I’m prepared to cover the cost of the project itself ($1,764), and the grant affords me $1,250 to use toward my travel expenses of $2,700. I humbly ask my friends and family to help me get the rest of the way. My goal is to raise another $1,500 to help cover the cost of my flight. Any little bit helps.
Thank you for your love and words of encouragement. I can’t wait to share my experience with you!
