My name is Lindsey Carr, and I am asking for your financial support to provide hope and a better quality of life for five-year-old Elijah and the Childs family.
On December 27, 2024, three of my family members were senselessly murdered in Charleston, SC. John (my uncle), Kim (my cousin), and Andrew Childs (my cousin) were all together at Kim's apartment putting Christmas toys together for Kim's five-year-old son, Elijah. Kim's estranged (and soon-to-be ex) husband, Darius, entered her apartment without permission and brutally killed John, Kim, and Andrew. He did all of this in front of Elijah before kidnapping him. Thankfully Darius was tracked very quickly to his house where he was confronted by police. He exited his home, gave Elijah over to the police, and proceeded to shoot himself. Within 30 minutes, Elijah lost his mother, father, grandfather, and uncle. When asked if he had any family remaining in the area, he quickly answered, "I have my uncle David, and my favorite cousin Lucy Kate."
My cousin, David, lost his father, sister, and brother that day. Kaeley, David's wife, lost her college roommate, bridesmaid, and best friend. Yet, without hesitation, they took Elijah into their home and began the process of seeking permanent guardianship. While experiencing their own grief, they've been working to adjust to an expanded family. They've gone from a family of five to a family of six, which is no simple task. Thankfully, so many in the community have rallied to support them. Church members, coworkers, friends, and family have already helped in tremendous ways, but as it was said at the Childs' memorial service, "This is a marathon, not a sprint."
An initial GoFundMe was created to raise funds for the ongoing care and support of Elijah in the coming years. The purpose of THIS GoFundMe is for more specific and immediate needs, as well as some quality-of-life improvements that will greatly benefit Elijah and the Childs family. These include things like:
- A newly built outdoor playground area, complete with swings and slides
- Additional outdoor toys
- Home repairs and uplifts
- Simple cosmetic enhancements to Elijah's new bedroom and living spaces
These tasks are not things I've been asked to do. Rather, it's simply seeing a need and attempting to meet it. They have already been through so much, and I'm believing that we can come together to bless them in an incredible way. Thankfully my family is ready and prepared to do the work! All we need is your financial support. Would you join us in blessing David, Kaeley, Elijah, and their family? There is nothing that will fix the pain and suffering that lies ahead, but I believe that in rallying together, we will demonstrate hope.
If you have further questions about any of this, please feel free to reach out to me through the GoFundMe platform. I thank you in advance for any amount given! We would welcome any ideas regarding pro bono contract work, and corporate donations that meet these needs are also much appreciated.
