Work in refugee Camp
Donation protected
My name is Adelina, I am a highly experienced systemic practitioner and a family coach with over 20 years of experience in working with families with complex needs in different settings. I am also a refugee- I left my country of origin Kosovo 24 years a go and now live in London with my family.
Last month, my collegues Ayman and Shivata, joined me in a volunteering trip to Ritsona-refugee camp in Greece. We joined I am You (an NGO that does amazing work in the camp) in training their international volunteers in ways of enagaging with the refugees to support them more effectively. However, we spent our days working with the refugee community; meeting the families and finding out about their current difficulties but also exploring their life stories and events that lead to them becoming refugees.
Life in the camp is tough. Several international NGO's are present and offer services to just about meet their very basic needs. While there we realised that there are huge gaps in therapeutic services for children and families. Therapeutic space will help these families deal with the past trauma and also start to visualise a better future. It would also help the parents to support their children in attending maistream school, dealing with challenges of the westen world and raising independent and resilient children. There is a small group of young unacompanied male adults that would benefit from mentoring sessions in planning their education, employment and re-integration. Ritsona, is an open camp and the risk of sexual exploatation remains high for all residents; male and female of all ages.
We want to go back, the 3 of us, and can only do that with your help. Every penny we raise will go directly to the refugees and will only be to their benefit. We will be offering group and 121 sessions to parents, families and young people covering the issues above, hoping to help them in their journey to re-integration. We need money for the resources to deliver and also translate and print handouts and reading materials for the attendees. Some of the training we provide is acreditted and we will have certificates and celebration ceremonies for all that complete. We would also like to use the trip to take with us clothes, toys and books (last time we send 180 kg of warm, winter clothes) focusing on essentials like socks and underwear as there is a great shortage off.
Shivata, Ayman and I, met the most amazing, intellegent, resilient people on our last trip to Ritsona. We met every single resident of the camp as we were lucky to be involved in the camp Census. That also helped us build trusting relationships with many and cant wait to go back and continue the work we started. We would also like to train the current volunteers- as the better they are prepared to deal with the emotional side of the refugee experience the better service the residents get.
It means so much to all of us to be able to go back. Refugees are people like you and I, they bring with them everything apart from their material possesions. To loose your home, country, language and reach a stage when you depend on others for everything including food and shelter- is very demotivating and depressing. We want to help them find their voice again, dream their dreams again and start looking into a brighter future for them, for their children.

Please support our cause and help us get back to Ritsona this January. For more information our profesional backgound and work history check us on www.totalfamilycoaching.co.uk.
