Help Wolde Kristos Rebuild After Hurricane Melissa
As Hurricane Melissa unleashed its fury on Bluefields, Jamaica, Wolde Kristos and four members of his family took refuge in a small bathroom—the only place they believed might protect them.
For hours, they listened as powerful winds battered their home. Walls cracked. The roof began to fail. Piece by piece, the three-bedroom house Wolde had worked a lifetime to build was torn apart around them.
Huddled together in the darkness, they prayed.
When the storm finally passed and they stepped outside, they found devastation. Their home had completely disappeared. Their belongings were gone. Everything they had built over decades had vanished in a single night.
By God's grace, they survived.
Aside from the clothes on their backs and their life everything else was lost.
Hurricane Melissa took:
- Their family home
- Wolde's hospitality business and primary source of income
- Vehicles essential for transportation and work
- Furniture, appliances, clothing, and cherished personal belongings
- The financial stability and security he had spent decades creating for his family
Today, Wolde faces the daunting task of rebuilding from the ground up. What was lost cannot be replaced overnight, but with the support of compassionate people, he can begin the long journey toward restoring a safe home, rebuilding his livelihood, and creating a future for his family once again.
A Message From Wolde
"As Hurricane Melissa tore through Bluefields, my family and I huddled together in a small bathroom while our home collapsed around us. It was the most frightening experience of our lives. By God's grace, we survived, but we lost everything we had worked for over a lifetime. We are grateful for every prayer, every act of kindness, and every person who chooses to support us as we begin the difficult journey of rebuilding."
— Wolde Kristos
A Lifetime Dedicated to Serving Others
For more than three decades, Wolde has been one of Bluefields' most respected community leaders and advocates.
Long before Hurricane Melissa, he devoted his life to helping others improve theirs. His leadership helped establish and strengthen several organizations that continue to serve residents throughout the region, including:
- Bluefields People's Community Association (1988), now the Bluefields People's Community Development Committee Benevolent Society
- Bluefields Bay Fishermen's Friendly Society (2005)
- Westmoreland Organic Farmers Friendly Society
Through his vision, persistence, and commitment to community development, Wolde helped secure support and resources for projects that transformed lives, including:
• Construction of a community center
• Development of two schools
• More than 280 housing units for families in need
• Advocacy that helped establish the Bluefields Bay Fish Sanctuary, protecting local fisheries and supporting the livelihoods of countless fishermen and families
When families needed housing, Wolde stepped forward.
When fishermen needed support, Wolde stepped forward.
When the community needed leadership, Wolde stepped forward.
Now, it is our turn to step forward for him.
Our Goal: $50,000
We are seeking to raise $50,000 to help Wolde and his family begin rebuilding their lives.
Funds raised will help provide:
✅ Building materials and home reconstruction
✅ Essential household furnishings and appliances
✅ Clothing and personal necessities
✅ Transportation replacement and repair
✅ Recovery and replacement of critical personal belongings
✅ Support for restarting his hospitality business and restoring family income
While no amount can replace everything that was lost, every dollar will help move this family closer to stability, security, and hope.
