Winthrop Maine Historical Society (WMHS) is pleased to announce the Society is under contract to purchase the Key Bank Building on Main St in Winthrop, Maine.

The vision of the Winthrop Maine Historical Society has long been to have a “Winthrop History and Heritage Center” in town.  The possibility has been discussed periodically for the last 40 years. Such a place would provide an environmentally controlled home to adequately and appropriately preserve the town’s wonderful history.  Through educational displays, exhibits, and programs the center can provide a venue for school trips and monthly speakers as well as bring an exciting welcome addition to the economic development of the town.

Incorporated on April 26, 1771, Winthrop was an official town before we were even a nation and 49 years before Maine became a State separate from Massachusetts. The town is blessed with a rich and robust history. In 2021, the town will celebrate its 250th birthday.  To have a grand opening then would be especially fitting and momentous.

The WMHS has been very active in recent years, with a growing collection of historic documents, photographs and artifacts regarding area history.  However, Winthrop has never had a permanent building where the town’s history can be centrally and adequately stored, researched and shared with the public.

The WMHS now has an opportunity to make the vision become real.  Yet this opportunity can only be realized with the help of the community and those who have fond memories of Winthrop or respect its history.

The Society is relying on the support of generous individuals and businesses in our community.  The Society respectfully request your financial contribution to this important project and will be most grateful for your critical participation.

Prior to the start of this Go Fund Me Campaign, The Society has received donations to the Building Fund from over a dozen local businesses and community members.

Will you please join us in this important and valuable project for our town by making a contribution now? Your donation will go towards the purchase of the building and any immediate renovation(s) to the building.

With donations of $250 or more you (person or business) will receive a commemorative gift in honor of Winthrop's 250th Anniversary in 2021.

Also, any donation of $1000 or more will receive special recognition by the Society within the building.

Another donor will match any donations of $1000 up to $5000 in honor of David Cook.

Thank you in advance for your contribution to this project that means so much to the Society and to the town of Winthrop.  Any donation will help make an impact.  Achieving this goal will mean we have preserved the history and be able to tell stories of the impact of our town for future generations.
