Winter Welcome Kits 4 Sacramento Afghan Refugees
Donation protected
My wife and I are military veterans and Pat Tillman Foundation Scholars volunteering with the International Rescue Committee (IRC) to welcome Afghan refugees arriving in Sacramento. IRC has asked us to collect 40 winter welcome kits and 5 family welcome kits. We need your help!
With your help, we will finish buying and assembling the kits and deliver them to IRC. We just made two kits of our own to donate (see picture above). We've so far collected/assembled 17 winter kits and two family welcome kits. We could use your help to finish our mission! $5,000 will be enough to buy the remaining items.
Here's what's included in the Winter Welcome Kit (23 more needed):
1 umbrella
1 blanket
1 coat (preference for children’s sizes M/L)
1 package of socks
1 pair of gloves
1 winter hat
1 scarf
Approximate cost: $150
Here's what's included in Family Welcome Kits (3 more needed):
* Household goods (e.g., Teapot & set, vacuum cleaner, lamp, glass bakeware, rice cooker, serving bowls & plates)
* Winter Items (e.g., Umbrella, blankets (new or homemade), gift cards for families to pick out items that fit their unique sizes)
* Commonly requested: Rugs (new), welcome mat, shoe rack, gift cards, USB stick, lamps, baby equipment (strollers, car seats (new), etc)
* Age-appropriate toys (e.g., Sports equipment (soccer balls), plush toys, art set/coloring books, bicycle and safety equipment (helmet, lock & lights))

We've been volunteering to welcome these families in Sacramento since last August, and we've seen first hand how they often arrive almost empty handed. A kit like this can make a big difference, especially during the winter.
Sacramento is one of the country's primary destinations for Afghan refugees. We have teamed up with other volunteers to help welcome them into our community, just like they helped me and other troops when were served in their country. Let's go!
P.S. Here's a recent article about our work helping IRC in Sacramento.
