Winter Refugee Relief for Moria
Donation protected
As many of you know, earlier this year I spent 3 months in Lesvos, Greece, providing living support to refugees in the Moria settlement.
I worked with people from Pakistan, Palestine, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Congo, to name a few.
Since I left the camp in May, more than 6,000 additional refugees have entered Moria. Today, more than 16,000 refugees inhabit a space built to house only 3,000 people comfortably - one of the the largest populations the camp has ever seen.
I am hosting a fundraiser to support refugees in Moria. Many refugees are families with young children, and right now they're sleeping without tents or blankets, and often on the ground in the cold. Open sewage runs through the camp, and a dearth of nonprofit support means inadequate supplies.
More crowding = more violence.
Moria's residents include people from Iraq, Afghanistan, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Palestine, and Syria. Most individuals are people suffering from severe trauma & PTSD from torture, war crimes, and other side effects of living through intense international conflict.
Without basic needs, including tents, the following can occur -- I’ve seen this firsthand:
1. More than 15 people attempt to share one tent (for semi-permanent living situations)
2. Women and children are at risk of violence and/or sexual assault
3. Abuse leads to self harm, attempted suicide, and drug / alcohol abuse among children
4. Refugees can freeze to death and are at higher risk of illness and disease
5. Illness spreads quickly throughout the camp (given the close proximity), again, resulting in death for people that suffer from exhaustion, malnutrition, and dehydration
Winter is coming up, and I'm raising money for NFI (non-food items) including tents, blankets, jackets, and socks. This will be dispersed throughout winter by my contacts on-the-ground.
The organization was handpicked after several weeks of interviews. You can learn more about Attika Human Support here: https://www.attikahumansupport.com/
Thank you so much for supporting me in a cause that I care so deeply about!
