Volunteer Trip w/ Peter Stutchbury

I believe every human being should have access to basic human rights, (clean water, sanitation and shelter) and if these basics are provided to an entire community, it can allow them to map their own destiny in a simple and practical way. Through education and thoughtful design, the direction of an entire community can go from one of despair to one of hope in an empowering and sustainable way.
Recently, thanks to Peter Stutchbury, one of Australia’s leading Architects (www.Peterstutchbury.com.au), and the Peter Stutchbury Architecture Foundation (www.peterstutchbury.com.au/psa-foundation.html), I have been presented with an incredible opportunity to travel to Paripe, Brazil to aid in improving the quality of health and lives of the community through education design and architecture.
Paripe is a community of approximately 270 people located in the northeast portion of All Saints Bay in Salvador North East Brazil. The community lacks basic sanitation, clean water, shelter and the Bay is polluted with heavy metals from the pharmaceutical plants located upstream.
In collaboration with faculty of health in Paripe, the first stage of the project’s focus is on a day care centre located in Paripe – providing clean water, washing facilities, rainwater tanks, and a definite separation between waste water and recreational areas for the children. The project is framed by the core Health habitat principles (http://www.healthabitat.com/
). The foundation hopes the design and knowledge learned from Paripe will be adapted and replicated for communities throughout Australia and the rest of the world.
My experience as a designer and a carpenter will allow me assist in implementing this project. On the 24th of November, I head to Brazil for 10 days to embark on the first stage of this project. The time spent in the lead up and following up to this project is volunteered. My time, travel, accommodation and general living costs are my own responsibility, therefore; any financial contribution to support me while implementing the first stage of this project would be greatly appreciated, but not expected.
