Common Pantry is a non-profit organization located on the Upper East Side of New York City. Their mission is to reduce hunger and promote dignity, health and self-sufficiency. They do this by providing essential resources to underserved New Yorkers who struggle to afford basic necessities, such as food, showers, and other vital services. My project is directly aligned with both their core food pantry program and another program they run called Project Dignity. Project Dignity offers unhoused individuals access to free showers, bathrooms, laundry services, and haircuts—services that many of us take for granted.
Over time, Common Pantry’s facilities have experienced wear and tear, and they now require attention and care. My project specifically addresses this need, focusing on an area where Common Pantry lacks the resources to dedicate—helping them maintain the dignity and comfort of their clients.
Leaders at Common Pantry want their facility to be a welcoming place for their clients when they come to “shop” at their pantry. The project will revitalize the entryway and waiting room at Common Pantry's 8 E 109th St location, where hundreds of New Yorkers pass through each day. The current entryway is outdated, and the color scheme is disliked by both staff and clients. By giving these areas a much-needed refresh, we not only improve the space visually but also foster an environment where clients can feel respected and dignified while waiting for their food.
This renovation is particularly important because these areas haven't been updated in over a decade. By handling this project, we free up Common Pantry to continue focusing on their core mission—feeding those in need—without having to worry about their facilities falling into disrepair.
Additionally, to further support Common Pantry's budget, we will be providing two new barber chairs and 3 sets of barber supplies to replace old, degraded equipment. This contribution will ensure that Project Dignity can continue offering quality services to unhoused New Yorkers for years to come.
