We represent a group of fellow homeowners in Wildwood, a neighborhood where all the streets are named after members of the Confederacy. We believe that the names displayed on our streets, describing our homes, is an expression of our values. We want people to know that our neighborhood is a place that welcomes all, with equality and inclusion. We also value the history of our state. We hope to change the names of our streets to reflect our neighborhood, Wildwood, and the natural beauty of North Carolina by renaming the streets from members of the Confederacy to native trees and plants. We have the power to make a small change here, in our own neighborhood, that could make our community a more welcoming, compassionate place.
The streets are currently named for:
Wade Hampton
Joseph Johnston
Judah Benjamin
John Breckinridge
Braxton Bragg
Alexander Stewart
George Anderson
Charlie Tew
Walter Clark
To reduce disruption and impact to property owners in our neighborhood, we plan to raise enough money to cover all community-level costs for renaming streets, which primarily include the cost of purchasing and installing new street signs. We currently estimate total costs to be $2,500, but that number may change depending on which streets decide to change their names. We understand that renaming is done street by street, and some streets may complete this process quickly while others may take longer. If possible, we also hope to raise some amount of additional funds to help with personal costs associated with changing street names, such as ordering a $13 replacement driver's license after a street name changes. Our main goals are to demonstrate the values of our neighborhood through the names of our streets, and reduce disruption, impact, and cost to individual property owners in the neighborhood. Any excess funds available after community costs have been paid, and financial assistance provided for personal costs, will be donated to a local organization working to end racism.
Where the money is going:
Cost of new street signs and installation of signs
Financial assistance as needed for personal costs (i.e., $13 replacement driver's license)
Donation to local organization working to end racism
