wildfires in Jasper National Park
As many of you know cycling to Jasper National Park (290km bike ride) was top of my Canada bucket list. I was determined to make it work and I jumped all the hurdles to get to do it and then the horrible wildfires broke out.
On July 22nd, Jasper was evacuated and within 48 hrs of the wildfires, 30% of the town was decimated, many people lost their homes, business', beloved belongings, a piece of their footprint and wildlife. My heart breaks for the community.
I wasn’t just riding my bike to visit the beautiful town of Jasper; I was also looking to challenge myself. So, while I was disappointed to no longer be going to Jasper and missing out on the challenge, what truly upset me was the sense of loss for the community and the people of Jasper.
So I thought let’s double the distance make it something big and raise money whilst doing it. So starting 11th of August I will be cycling 510km over 7 days around Banff National Park, my current home. I am aiming to do 75km a day whilst still averaging 12 thousand steps at work. 510km is by far the longest concurrent distance I have ever done, even while I was a spin instructor I would only do around 100km a week.
I am planning on being in Canada for two years, and during my time here, I don't just want to benefit from this beautiful country—I also want to give back and help wherever possible. Your support would mean a lot to me, so please consider donating whatever you can.
I chose the Canadian Red Cross as the Government of Canada and the Government of Alberta will match every dollar donated to the Canadian Red Cross 2024 Alberta Fires Appeal. This means that every $1 donated will become $3 to support those affected by the wildfires. Donations will assist those impacted by the wildfires in Jasper and other areas in Alberta. Funds will support immediate and ongoing relief, financial assistance, evacuee support, recovery efforts, and community preparedness for future disasters.
