Kim Needs an Accessible Van!

We are raising money to help get Kim the wheelchair accessible van she has been waiting for! While living in an assisted living facility in Saco, Kim has driven her motorized wheelchair all over downtown. To the library, grocery store and to meet friends for lunch. Kim has made the best of her wheelchair wheels, but they can only take her so far and her wheelchair is extremely unsafe traveling on the road, especially in winter or at night. She is seeking funds to buy a handicap accessible van that she can operate through hand controls, this will allow Kim the independence most of us take for granted. It will also allow Kim to get to Augusta, where she will advocate for better accessibility in downtown Saco and throughout Maine. She is looking for the ability to give back to the community she’s surrounded by as well as taking part in the greater Portland community and the Cape Elizabeth school system. Kim is looking to give back to others by providing transportation for other wheelchair bound individuals and bring them to their family’s birthdays, baby showers, graduations, weddings, etc. Kim has taken the first 2 parts of the series of 3 to be licensed to drive with these hand controls. Those individuals who are restricted to wheelchairs and in “care facilities”, where the facilities are only required to transport the residents for medically necessary appointments, have no options to get around. She has no way to go anywhere else. In the past 4 years of being in nursing care, Kim has missed out on so much with her family from her son’s sporting events, parent teacher conferences, and family weddings. Kim is not going to let her condition slow her down and continues to have a positive outlook on the future! She is the most gracious and thankful individual we know.
