I am a co-guardian for my younger sister who has Down Syndrome. My older sister and I have cared for her in the home since our mom passed several years ago. She not only has Down Syndrome, she has chronic kidney disease. A year and a half ago, she lost her eyesight, unknown reason. She then became bedridden as she was scared with not seeing anything and not understanding why she couldn't see. We have struggled with the healthcare system to get assistance to help us. After a year of struggle and with the persistence of a physical therapist and a wheelchair technician expert, we were able to get equipment to assist in getting her out of bed and getting a custom-fit wheelchair. Honestly, we are all surprised how well she has done with this. She had gotten so weak lying in bed. She loves getting up and sitting in her chair! She has overcome so much in the last 2 years, having sepsis, pneumonia, and then getting COVID. She continues to fight!
We feel now, since she has done so well and come so far, that getting a wheelchair-accessible van is our next step. We need to get to doctor appointments (haven't been able to see the doctor other than a couple of virtual visits, which they are now limiting) or just to go for a ride or do some shopping, so she can interact with others in the community.
I have decreased my work hours to assist in taking care of her. We have had to provide for some of her medical needs that insurance doesn't cover. All of that has us limited on what we can afford for a van.
It is difficult for me to ask for help, but I just really want to give my sister what she deserves and for her to be able to have some enjoyment after everything she has been through. Thank you for your consideration in helping us!
