'Wheeling for Waves' of change!

Donation protected
Wheeling for Waves is about empowering people to make waves of change in their community!

...it is a journey, but it's about supporting local.  I am active in events which use surfing as a means for healing, empowerment, and outreach.  But not every place has surf; what other tools are there for making a lasting, positive impact?  How can YOU make waves (of change) in your city?  I will be exploring what supporting local feels like in different places, and working to promote and fund nonprofits in each community.

UPDATE: (14 Aug, 2016)
As some of you know, I've been struggling with unexpected health issues (please, NO inquiries), and after exhausting every alternative, I have to cancel my bike ride.

I AM still donating to the nonprofits as planned, and I will be continuing to fundraise and volunteer in lieu of being on the road; stay tuned for updates! I am remaining optimistic about my mission and what can still be accomplished. THANK YOU everyone who has continued to support my efforts!

The Ride:. In summer 2016, I will be riding my bicycle from the Atlantic Coast to the Pacific (including stops in Philadelphia, Washington DC, Colorado, and Portland).

Along the way, I will be volunteering, hosting clinics, and advocating local nonprofits, while also promoting my home group, AccesSurf Hawaii.  Empowerment by Example!! If I can get involved with your local charities, so can you!

The Nonprofits
:

O'ahu, Hawaii:  AccesSurf Hawaii
An amazing organization which creates programs allowing adults and children with disabilities enjoy the healing power of the ocean.  They offer surfing, adaptive swim clinics, and more

(stay tuned as we announce our partners and sponsors!)

The Goal:  Although the primary purpose is to inspire communities into action (chee!), financial funding is equally important!  I'll be fundraising, selling shirts, and flat-out soliciting donations along my journey.   Which brings us to...

The Donations:  A part of donations will help fund my trip.  The remainder will be donated to the organizations I am partnering with, including AccesSurf and the partner nonprofit in your area; you're supporting me, my cause, AND local organizations!  Woah.

Funding may include; Wheeling for Waves t-shirts, volunteer/fundraiser event supplies, promotional costs, bicycle parts/ gear, camping supplies, accomodation costs, etc.
Funding will NEVER include: hotels, lavish meals, sightseeing, souvenirs, alcoholic beverages, etc etc etc.

Raye Teyssier is a full-time surf instructor on Oahu's north shore; originally from the Greater Philadelphia Area, she has a varied background and especially utilizes sports and entertainment/ the arts for outreach. She has been involved with many charities, including AccesSurf, Make A Wish, National Parkinson's Foundation, FACES Autism, Charity Water, Mauli Ola Foundation,  Sustainable Coastlines Hawaii, Save the Children, and more.

In 2011, to celebrate her 25th birthday, she created Wheeling for Wells, a bike race to raise money for wells to be built in Africa (through the organization Charity Water).  A small race in Cape May, NJ, with homemade food, handmade t-shirts, and a single musician playing, W4W blew past its modest goal and raised over $700 towards a well project.
It's second run in 2012 more than doubled in donations.  Featuring multiple bands and musicians, shirts with the official logo, raffles, a pub crawl, an appearance by Miss South Jersey, and more than a dozen local sponsors, (and still single-handedly organized by Raye), W4W raised over $1600 towards clean water.  You can see the link at https://my.charitywater.org/raye-teyssier/wheeling4wells2012

Continuing W4W has been a dream of Raye's since moving to Hawaii in 2012.  This year, for her 30th birthday, she wants to make that dream a reality; re-structuring the mission statement and putting the focus on creating an active relationship between donor and cause, Wheeling for Waves is born.  "Biking from coast to coast is actually a lot less daunting than having another W4W event," Raye laughs, explaining the challenges ahead.  Her hope is that the insight gathered on this trip, working with so many different organizations, will give her the tools needed to kick off another successful event that will continue being held annually.  "This is my research project," she explains, "and the theme is mutual empowerment.  I want people to say 'wow, if she can do this long trip, maybe I can handle a week long ride, or a weekend of volunteering,' or something like that.  By the same token, I hope that, come next year, if I'm feeling daunted by an event I'm trying to structure, I can look back and say, 'hey, look at all the support I received on that crazy journey!  I'm sure I can find the resources to make this a success, too.'  It goes both ways."
