Hello! My name is Sonny and I'm the Director of Equestrian Therapy Co-op in Simi Valley, CA. http://equestriantherapy.net We are a small, family owned therapeutic horseback riding program that serves special needs children and adults in Ventura and Los Angeles Counties.

Our facility is aging and we are in real need of a new wheelchair ramp for our students. Our current ramp is made of wood and is now 15 years old. It needs to be replaced with an aluminum ramp that can withstand weather and will require little to no maintenance. Equestrian Therapy is horseback riding for individuals with special needs. By combining equestrian techniques with concepts of physical therapy, Equestrian Therapy is practiced in an atmosphere of fun and encouragement. The natural affinity between people and horses is a powerful way of encouraging the students to improve: BALANCE, COORDINATION, MOTOR SKILLS, FOCUS and SELF CONFIDENCE.

In less than fifteen minutes, a walking horse takes a thousand steps. Each step requires the rider to use their muscles and mind to maintain balance and control the horse. Students learn traditional horsemanship skills while participating in games based on physical and occupational therapies.

Almost every person with special needs can benefit from therapeutic riding. Improvements have been observed in students with cerebral palsy, autism, behavioral problems, and other physical and developmental challenges. Riding builds muscle strength, balance, coordination, joint mobility, communication and perceptual skills.

Equestrian Therapy Co-op is an all volunteer program located in the hills of Simi Valley, CA on a 3000 acre working ranch and retreat. Our dedicated volunteers provide a caring and unique therapeutic experience in a serene natural setting.

Founded in 1961 by therapeutic riding pioneer Jacques Fouchaux, who taught horsemanship to hundreds of special needs students, Equestrian Therapy Co-op continues to provide a safe, family oriented environment for riders and volunteers.
