Joe's battle with cancer
Donation protected
Myself, Becky Gregory and Sophie Taylor are running the Manchester marathon this sunday to try and raise funds for a young boy with cancer at our school. Please read the story below and if you can donate, we would really appreciate it.
Joe is 15 years old and battling cancer.
Joe was first diagnosed in Nov 2022 with Ewig Sarcoma. Which was detected in his pelvis. Ewing sarcoma is a rare type of cancer that affects bones or the tissue around bones. It mainly affects children and young people, but is also seen in adults. It's more common in males than females.
Joe had been suffering with pain in his legs for about 3 months prior to diagnosis - it was put down to child arthritis but unfortunately after Joe was rushed to Manchester Children’s Hospital and had a scan, it was confirmed that he had a tumour at the base of his spine. Further scans confirmed he also has a tumour on his scull & pelvis.
Joe started chemo in Jan 2023 & Radiotherapy in April 2023. The treatment has been gruelling, painful and exhausting for Joe and also for his family. He lost all his hair and has been at times in immense pain. After 6 months of treatment the maximum Joe was allowed, treatment stopped in July 2023. Since then it has been a waiting game to see if the treatment had any sort of effect. After further scans it seemed the treatment had slightly reduced the tumour.
Sadly Joe has again been very unwell and in alot of pain and after another MRI scan the cancer has now been detected in his knee, leg & arm. He'll need a further PET scan which will indicate if cancer is anywhere else on his body and will determine what treatment he needs to undergo going forward. No doubt another gruelling process ahead of him & his family.
Joe’s parents, siblings & close family have been by his side every single day since his diagnosis . Kelly, his mum, has had to give up work completely to care for Joe and has been unable to return.
As you can imagine, money is tight - especially with the rising cost of living, and mortgage rates rocketing. This is a worry that no parent should have whilst trying to support their child while they fight for their life. The story is absolutely tragic and every parents worst nightmare. Life changed in a matter of hours.
We have set up this page for support for the whole family, We would like to support them in being able to get some respite as a family and cover any financial concerns whilst Kelly can’t work.
Hospital stays can be expensive, if you’re unfortunate enough to have had a stay in hospital, this you’ll know.
So, please, we know times are hard for everyone but if you can spare any money to help us help them, donate or even just share this page across social media.
We appreciate all the support so far & thank you in advance for your kindness.
