Justice for Joel: A Mother's Fight for Truth
They told me to stop asking questions.
They told me it was an accident and that I would never find out what happened to him.
They told me I needed to accept that I would never know.
But I knew something was terribly, terribly wrong.
My name is Shelley-Jo Kyle. In September 2023, my beautiful 31-year-old son Joel Edward Mills
my gentle, red-haired, creative soul was found dead. He was a beloved brother to his three brothers and sister. He had many friends who loved him. He loved life, animals, and his pets. His death was listed as undetermined. Case closed.
Except it wasn't closed. Not for me.
Because the documents didn't match. The timeline made no sense. And the more I dug, the more the lies unraveled.
Here's what they don't want you to know:
The official autopsy report claims it began on September 13th. But CT scans from September 12th, the day before, already show major organs missing from Joel's body.
Where did his organs go? Who removed them? And why won't anyone answer me?
Joel was captured on camera at the Dollarama on Jepson Street and Victoria Ave in Niagara Falls at 10:20 AM on September 6th. His father originally told police that Joel fed the cat at 10 o'clock at night and never came back, that he never saw him again. But later, his father told me a completely different story that Joel returned home from the Dollarama and left somewhere in the middle of the night.
All of Joel's clothing and belongings were found at his father's house. Joel was found unclothed. His father admitted to his daughter that he beat Joel in the head. He told the detective it didn't matter because Joel was "already gone" and to wrap up this case quickly. He didn't want to pay him much. He was only doing this for my benefit.
They made it look like Joel was found in the Niagara River, but this was all a cover-up. We don't believe he was in the river long, if at all.
We don't even know Joel's actual date of death. The evidence suggests it was somewhere between September 7th and 10th. The College of Physicians says Joel was found on the 9th. The police say it was the 10th. They can't even get that basic fact straight.
Joel's own Medical Certificate of Death proves he was alive in a hospital on September 7, 2023, receiving active medical care, generating OHIP billing records, on the exact same day police officially closed his missing person investigation and declared him "missing."
How do you close a missing person case for someone who's lying in a hospital bed?
I've filed five civil lawsuits totaling $11.6 million against the Niagara Regional Police, the Office of the Chief Coroner, Niagara Health System, and others who failed my son. I'm representing myself in these complex cases against higher authorities with unlimited legal budgets and resources.
But I have the proof. The receipts. The records. The timeline that doesn't lie.
I'm going up against billion-dollar institutions. I spend my nights organizing evidence. My days in Zoom courtrooms. What income I have goes toward filing fees, document requests, and evidence preparation.
I've filed complaints. I've contacted the media. I've knocked on every door. Most have slammed shut in my face.
But I will not stop. I cannot stop.
Joel believed in truth. In his final months, we'd talk for hours about justice, consciousness, and what it means to really see reality for what it is. He was the kind of person who saw through illusions, who questioned everything, who refused to accept easy answers.
I hear Joel speak those words to me: "Mom, we've cracked the case." And he's right. The evidence is there. The truth is there.
He saw what others wouldn't see. And now I'm fighting to make sure the world sees it too.
The cases are moving forward with multiple hearings scheduled. I'm seeking legal counsel while preparing for upcoming court dates in February, April, and beyond. The case against Niagara Health is still in the discovery stage. But I need help covering court filing fees and legal costs, document production and evidence printing, and the income I lose when I'm in virtual hearings instead of working.
Every donation helps, regardless of how small or how big. Because this fight isn't about money. It's about whether one mother's voice can be louder than an institution's silence.
This isn't just Joel's story. It's every family who's been dismissed, ignored, and told to move on.
If this can happen to my son, a young man with his whole life ahead of him, it can happen to anyone.
Please help me finish this fight. Help me prove that truth matters. That his life mattered.
Every share, every donation, every person who refuses to look away, you're standing with Joel. With me. With justice.
With a mother's unbreakable love,
Shelley-Jo Kyle
Joel's mom, fighting for truth and justice
