Welcome Corps: Support a Refugee Family from Colombia
Donation protected
Allison, Ale, Erin, Jennifer, and Sarah are fundraising to welcome a refugee family of 5 from Colombia to the Washington DC area via Welcome Corps! We are looking forward to their arrival in January.
What is Welcome Corps?
Welcome Corps launched in 2023 and is a federal initiative led by the State Department that allows everyday Americans to sponsor refugees and provide a safe, legal pathway for refugees to come to the United States.
Why Support Welcome Corps?
This initiative is about creating lasting connections between newcomers and their new communities. As sponsors, we'll play a vital role in fostering a sense of belonging for refugees and reinforcing our nation's tradition of compassion and support.
Many refugees spend years - the average is 20 years - with refugee status, often living in refugee camps or settlements that provide limited opportunity for one to realize their full potential. Only about 1% of refugees have the opportunity to move to a country like the United States. Through Welcome Corps, we have the opportunity provide a safe, legal pathway to a refugee family. All refugees entering the U.S. from a third country are screened by the U.S. government prior to arrival.
How Can You Help?
Your contributions will directly support the family of four we are sponsoring. The funds you help us raise will go towards things like:
- Rent and utilities for the first few months
- English classes
- Home furnishings
- Transportation
- Food, clothing, and other basic necessities
Based on Welcome Corps' guidance, we need to raise $2,500 per family member to sponsor a family. Our goal is to support a family of up to 5 and we have set the goal to raise $25,000 to ensure that the family has adequate support to become settled and self-sufficient. This ensures that we are adequately prepared to support a family in finding their first home (security deposit, rent for the first few months), furnishing the apartment, and supporting a family with their basic needs (food, clothing, etc.) as they settle into their new community.
We are so excited for this opportunity to strengthen our community by welcoming a new family eager to make a home here in the Washington DC area. Every donation, no matter the size, brings us closer to creating a welcoming, compassionate community where everyone has the chance to thrive.
Thanks for your support!
