Before I tell my story… there are words I need you to read first.
Words about humanity, about trying… even when everything feels impossible.
" You know that Mr Rogers thing of ‘look for the helpers’? How many times has someone, facing the end, done something tiny and fragile and maybe hopeless just to try and help someone else? Whether it works or not. How many people went to their graves at least trying?
That has to say something about us. As a people. As monstrous as we sometimes (perhaps often) are, so many times we were also …
Whoever saves one life, saves the whole world.
And sometimes you can’t save one life, sometimes it doesn’t work, sometimes there’s no getting out of this for anyone, but … try anyway. Because it matters anyway.
And maybe no one will ever know. But maybe also some day more than a century down the line, maybe some idiot will be crying into her coffee because of what you died trying."
Now… this is our story.
My name is Enas Majed. I am a mother of four children: Layan (11), Sarah (9), Adam (6), and Amir, who is one and a half years old and was born during the war.
My husband, Mohammed Alanqer, and I are living with our children in a torn tent in the street, in Gaza, surrounded by destruction.
We no longer have a home. Everything we had is gone.
When it rains, water enters the tent and soaks my children’s bedding. We wake up cold and wet, with nothing to protect us.
We live in an environment full of insects and rodents. Rats come into our tent and reach our food. There are also reptiles and snakes around us, because we are living in the open, among destroyed homes.
My children suffer from insect bites, mosquitoes, and skin diseases. Their bodies are exhausted from these conditions. Every day, I am afraid for them because of the spread of illness and disease.
We have no source of income. We depend completely on donations. If we receive support, we can buy food, clothes, medicine, and basic needs. If we don’t, we simply cannot provide these things.
Our goals are simple:
First, your support helps us provide food, clothing, medicine, and basic needs for our children.
Second, if we receive enough support, we may be able to rent a small place where we can move with our children. A place that can protect them from the street, provide some safety, cleanliness, and a more stable environment. We want them to live in slightly better conditions and have a chance to return to learning after losing years of education because of the war.
Third, any additional support can help us prepare our documents and cover future expenses if we are ever given the chance to leave Gaza and move to a safer place. Right now, travel is very limited, but we want to be prepared for any opportunity.
We are just trying to live.
We need your support.
Thank you.
