DEAFCONNECT DESPERATELY NEEDS YOUR HELP!!
Deafconnect is a specialist charity in Northamptonshire supporting deaf and hard of hearing people across the county. They have had a massive impact on my family and are now in a position where they are facing closure. This is because the councils (North Northamptonshire and West Northamptonshire) have cut all the funding they used to provide to the organisation.
This charity has been providing services to the deaf and hard of hearing community in Northamptonshire for over 150 years. Their staff are specialists in their area because of their lived experience and many years of service.
They are also custodians of the Spencer Dallington Community Centre which provides vital support for the community in a significantly deprived area of Northampton. Through the Neighbourly scheme (food donations from local supermarkets), a community table is run to enable local people to pick up food for free or for a small donation. You just need to be in the centre for a few hours to see how needed this is for people who are struggling with the cost of living crisis. There is also a cafe that runs every Wednesday, which gives local disabled young people an opportunity to develop their life skills and local people who are struggling the opportunity to come and have a hot meal in a warm place for a small amount of money.
Over the last century, Deafconnect has supported thousands of clients who are facing barriers everyday, helping them integrate into the hearing environment whilst encouraging their independence, confidence and coping strategies by providing:
- BSL Interpreters | Lip Speakers and Note Takers ( Doctors, Hospitals and employment appointments)
- BSL classes
- Deaf awareness training at schools and work places
- Deaf support groups for children and adults
- Tinnitus and hearing loss support groups
- Adult drop in sessions - these cover everything from completing PIP/DLA forms (Benefits), understanding official letters, booking appointments via telephone.
Without Deafconnect, the deaf community is left with no local support. In order to keep going, this vital organisation needs a minimum of £300,000. Please donate whatever you can.
