Hello I'm Jose and I live in Brevard County, Florida. My friends and I have begun taking up donations so we can go into a community with a high homeless population.
Giving the basics is our goal. Feminine products, soap, sanitizer, razors, canned goods (with pop tops), blankets, lotion, sunblock, (new) underwear, water, and a periodic hot meal. We did a fish fry with fish we caught. We made spaghetti with some donated food. We are also using our own money, but my ignorance of how many people need help is part of why I'm here. The things mentioned won't be sustainable. The coworkers' and friends' donations have been very impressive but will not last. We have also emptied our personal pantries and hurricane kits.
To be honest, I'll be ok without a dollar being donated because we will still go out and spend time with these folks. In an attempt to have them feel like a person with at least some dignity, we can do that for free. I'd rather do it with supplies in tow and some hot dogs or off-brand spam. So if you got a buffalo nickel or a McDonald's gift card with 37 cents left, we will put it to the best use. If you live in the county and have a pair of socks missing one of the socks, we'll take it. I didn't want to ask anyone for anything more than old clothes, but after seeing what a good meal can spark in this community, it made us desperate to continue to deliver this.
Even if you don't have anything to give, please leave a comment so I can show some of my new acquaintances that there are people who care. Thank you for reading my plea.
