Tanji youths in solidarity for development is a community based association formed by residents of Tanji Village - The Gambia, and others who have a direct and/or indirect link to Tanji Village.
The association has identified various development needs but poor road infrastructure has been a major challenge especially at this current moment were raining season is around the corner. The association was able to received an allocation of 100 trips of gravel authorised by Geology department but we didn’t have a vehicle to transport the gravels to the filled the most affected parts of the road which becomes inaccessible during raining season.
The short time objective of the project is to backfilled all the affected parts of the road with gravels and hard rocks to prevent the running water to create a flood on the road.
we have been offered a support from an institution in the Gambia to assist with the transportation of trips of gravel to the village and they have transported around 17 trips of gravel out of the anticipated 100 trips. This said institution is yet to transport any further trips since last week and the association and the villagers are worried if quick intervention is not forthcoming, the effort and work being carried out by the association will go in vain and the problem will persist during the raining season.
The association has also identified poor drainage system at the entrance of the village at the beach area. This poor drainage overflows during raining due to its poor structure and the amount of waste and other debris inside the drainage. The association had engaged in a cleansing exercise to remove debris from the drainage but the structure is damage which needs a repair. There is temporary market stall erected around the drainage where village women sells grocery products such as vegetables but this market is inaccessible during raining season due to the overflow of water that comes out of the drainage thus preventing the village women from engaging in trade which affect their income and create a risk for them as they unlawfully occupy spaces on the main coastal road at the beach which pose significant risk to them and their customers as Tanji beach is a very busy road.
We need trucks or cash to help hire trucks to transport the remaining trips of gravels to the village. We also need cement, trips of sand and rod to repair the damage drainage system.
