As some of you may know, Mandy (with hubby Matt) were medevacked to Seattle, Swedish Hospital directly from Bartlett on December 27. Her baby boy was taken via c-section six weeks early on December 28. He is beautiful!
Mick “Mickey” James Richardson arrived weighing 7lbs, 5oz, and 19” long. Mama is doing good, but it was a scary time with her extremely high-risk pregnancy due to her type-1 diabetes and preeclampsia. With Mandy’s health issues, Mickey has had a tougher road than most moderately preterm babies. Mickey has made great progress, however, a few days ago it was discovered via an MRI that he had a blood spot on his brain, which might have occurred during delivery since the c-section was so traumatic in getting him out. A suction cup was used to pull him out through the narrow opening past all the massive fluid, swelling, and scar tissue in mama’s abdomen. The blood on the brain might be affecting his motor skills which could explain why he forgets to breathe while sucking and swallowing, although that is also a side-effect of babies born to diabetic mothers. Mickey has been on a feeding tube since birth, and he stops breathing causing Mandy, Matt, or attending staff to rub Mickey’s back vigorously to get him to take a breath again. Scariest thing they have ever been through together. It is undetermined how much longer Mickey will be in the NICU. They are asking for prayers, love, and support. Matt will be running out of leave at Costco if he has to stay in Seattle much longer, and we don’t want him to return home leaving Mandy to fend for herself in Seattle, especially since she isn’t 100% recovered. They are staying in a hotel, rented a vehicle, and doing the best they can until they all come home. Thank you so much in advance for helping out if you can with Mandy and Matt’s unforeseen expenses. Please don’t feel bad if you can’t financially assist, your prayers and love are worth far more.
P.S. Mandy and Matt’s other three children are with family in Juneau. So, all is well in that department, except grandma and Pop might be a bit grayer now.
