Woodbury Heights is a small borough comprised of approximately 3,000 residents spread over a1.2 square mile radius. The town is a family-oriented, working class neighborhood with 30% of residents living with children under 18 years old. Woodbury Heights is a close-knit community with many families having lived here for generations. Our public elementary school is located in the central hub of the town. The school playground is used by all and has been designated a public park during off-school hours.
The public playground spaces on the grounds of Woodbury Heights Elementary School (WHES) at 100 Academy Avenue—which is utilized before, during and after school hours by students attending the school, as well as other children in the community and from neighboring towns—needs to be rejuvenated as it include decades-old swingsets, broken equipment, and a play system that has been vandalized. In addition, a deteriorating piece of wooden equipment had to be removed in 2013, leaving a large empty space.
There is very little equipment for the 200+ WHES school children spanning grades Pre-Kindergarten to 6th to use for physical activity during gym class, recess, and the school’s aftercare programming.
Quality playground equipment is very expensive to purchase and professionally install.
Public dollars are stretched thin. The school budget for WHES doesn’t have room for playground equipment, nor are property taxes from Woodbury Heights residents and businesses available at this time to defray the cost of new playground equipment.
The ultimate outcome is to provide our children—WHES students as well as children and visitors from neighboring towns--with a safe, beautiful playground in which to play, exercise and build friendships.
