Worcester Community Skate Camp

The Worcester Community Skateshop (WCS) started in July of 2018. Our mission is to increase access to skateboarding in Worcester, MA, by offering free and affordable goods at our shop, and by organizing community events and programs.

This summer we are organizing our first full youth program called Worcester Community Skate Camp, in partnership with Worcester's Division of Youth Opportunities, Recreation Worcester program.

Our vision is to support a two-tier youth development model where we hire young people between the ages of 16 and 21, to both work at our shop, and be leaders in the skate camp program. These youth leaders will assist in the development, facilitation, and evaluation, of our program in Rec Worcester, where we will teach 7 to 13 year olds how to skateboard.

This program will provide youth with opportunities to gain workforce and leadership skills, while being compensated for their work in the community. They will develop supportive relationships with adults from the skateshop, and younger youth from Rec Worcester. The youth participants of skate camp will be exposed to an alternative activity to mainstream organized sports and arts programs, and will develop skills in skateboarding, teamwork, critical thinking, and creative problem solving.

We see skateboarding as a meaningful practice, that combines physical activity, mental focus, and creative expression, where people build community. We believe no one should be blocked from skateboarding because of their gender identity, sexual orientation, race, class, or neighborhood.

Your contribution to our project is vital to it's success. We are seeking funds to pay for Worcester Community Skateshop staff, to oversee the program administratively, and be adult allies to our youth leaders. We are working with Rec Worcester staff to become a Youth Works site which will provide the compensation for youth leaders, but need to ensure that our own shop members can put in the time and effort to make this program meaningful.

We are also seeking funds for the office supplies, extra helmets and protective gear, food and refreshments, and other necessary materials we will need for the program.

Since July of 2018, we have collected over 100 skateboards, and many other necessary skate goods from individuals and local skateshops. We co-hosted the Bloxx Party with 508Bikelife. We completed Worcester Roots Co-op Academy. We have built out our shared shop space at WooRides, and held a film screening of the movie "Skate Kitchen."

Our shop is located at 22 Portland Street. Our open hours are on Sundays from 3pm to 6pm.
