New Beginning After 52 Years

Hi everyone,

I’m reaching out on behalf of my grandfather, who has just been released from prison after serving 52 years. This transition has been overwhelming, emotional, and completely uncharted territory—for him, and for all of us. He’s now an elderly man who simply wants a chance to live the rest of his life with dignity, peace, and comfort.

Before his incarceration, he served honorably in Vietnam. He went into prison in the early 1970s—before cell phones, before the internet, before most of us were even born. He was locked away for over half a century. To put that in perspective: presidents have come and gone, wars have started and ended, the world has changed entirely. And somehow, despite it all, he survived.

It is almost unheard of for someone to be released after that much time. Most people don’t live to see the outside again. So the fact that he’s still here with us, still breathing, still trying—it’s nothing short of a miracle. He has paid his debt a thousand times over. And now, more than anything, we want him to be able to enjoy what time he has left in comfort and peace.

But the system that took so much from him didn’t offer any help once he got out. He left prison with nothing—no ID, no Social Security card, no birth certificate. No clothes. No medication. No access to food, housing, or healthcare. The prison system isn’t built to help people reenter the world—it’s built to forget them. And for 52 years, he was forgotten.

The VA has told us it could take at least 8 months before he can begin receiving any benefits. In the meantime, my mom has taken him in, and we’re doing everything we can to care for him—but this all happened so fast, and we weren’t financially prepared. He has Parkinson’s disease and very real daily needs—medications, food, clothing, transportation, paperwork—basic human necessities that we’re now scrambling to provide.

We’re not asking for much—just enough to get him through this initial transition period and make sure he’s warm, fed, and cared for. If you feel moved to help, we would be forever grateful. And if you can’t contribute, simply sharing this means more than you know.

He’s not a threat to society—he’s an old man who has paid his debt, and now needs support more than anything. After so many years of isolation, what he needs most is a reminder that people still care.

Thank you for reading, and thank you for any kindness you’re able to give. We’re doing this with open hearts—and every bit of help matters.

With love and gratitude,
Jessica
