Hi my name is Benjamin,

I'm working on a project to set up water therapy and surf lessons for individuals with autism and other challenges, helping them find a way to connect with themselves and the ocean.

I have been working in social care for 4 years. During this time I started using the ocean and water as a way for people with autism to find a place to regulate themselves, and their emotions, the ocean and its environment helped them channel and express themselves. A lot of these people are finding it difficult to stay regulated with all the challenges they face and the ocean has been a healing force in finding connections and an outlet outside of their center.

Recently I have met other individuals outside of work like, Luke who approached me while surfing in Tramore and now I facilitate Surfing Lessons and Water Therapy on Sundays.

I would like to set up sea therapy sessions and surf lessons to open up ways that people with disabilities or even trauma or simply individuals who need one to one guidance and support. Therapeutic aspect such as cold shock, water play, sensory stimulation from the ocean and nature has had profound effects and has helped these individuals grow and develop.

The funds will be used to buy equipment and support my lifeguard and instructor training during unpaid hours to attend the 28 week course in Tramore in the Lifeguard Training Center.

The course is nearing its final stage and I’ll be doing my exams. I have already completed the pool lifeguard. It has been an amazing journey so far.

I will eventually need a van to store surfboards but that’s once everything is set up.

The overall aim is to set up a service that supports various individuals connect to the ocean and themselves, to build pathways to positively stimulate their mind body and spirt. Please support me with what you can on this journey to change lives.
