Hello friends! Have you ever imagined what it’s like to live without access to clean water? Simple activities like cooking, washing, and even bathing become incredibly difficult. Without clean water, basic hygiene and sanitation are nearly impossible to maintain.

Let us introduce you to Tautpah Village, a small rural community in South Biboki District, North Central Timor Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia. Behind its breathtaking natural scenery lies a story rarely heard: a daily struggle for clean water.

Background

The village of Tautpah is home to 1,211 people from 302 families, the majority of whom work as farmers and livestock breeders. Unfortunately, Tautpah faces difficulties in accessing clean water due to its dry natural conditions and the location of the water source, which is 80 meters higher in elevation than the residential area. Residents must travel 500 meters to 1 kilometer and spend 1–2 hours each day to collect water, in addition to bearing the high cost of water tanks—up to IDR 100,000 for 1,100 liters. At present, our project focuses on 3 out of the village’s 6 hamlets (Hamlets 2, 3, and 4)—covering 127 families or around 675 people—to maximize assistance to the local community. Who Are We — Solar Chapter Melbourne

We are Solar Chapter Melbourne, part of Solar Chapter, a non-profit organization dedicated to uplifting remote communities across Indonesia. Since 2017, Solar Chapter has successfully restored access to clean water in 23 villages across East Nusa Tenggara, positively impacting the lives of over 32,000 people.

Our mission is to create long-term social impact by focusing on clean water access, education, and community development. We work closely with local communities to ensure that every solution is effective, sustainable, and community-driven. We believe sustainable progress must begin by meeting the community’s most basic needs and only then can they thrive independently.

Project Solution & Design

To address the water crisis in Tautpah (hamlets 2, 3, and 4), Solar Chapter Melbourne will work hand-in-hand with the local community to build a solar-powered water pump system, complete with transmission pipes and solar panels. This system is designed to deliver up to 36,300 liters of water daily to meet the community’s needs.

The use of solar panels reflects our commitment to sustainability through renewable energy. By harnessing the abundant sunlight in East Nusa Tenggara, the system will efficiently power water pumps. We also ensure the long-term sustainability of the project through ongoing monitoring, training local water committees, engaging the community, and forming a management body supported by a village-level water contribution system.

This solar-powered system has the potential to create lasting impact for years to come. But to make this a reality, we need your support to scale our project and bring life-changing access to clean water for everyone in Tautpah.

Our Proven Track Record — Takarai Village 2024

In 2024, we completed a successful clean water project in Takarai Village, providing 60,000 liters of water per day to approximately 500 villagers. Today, 110 homes and two schools have access to clean water.

With a reliable water supply, residents no longer spend hours collecting water from distant sources. That time and energy now go toward farming, learning, working, and other productive activities. The financial burden of buying water has also been reduced, allowing families to use their income for more essential needs. The new system also supports agriculture through irrigation and reduces the risk of disease caused by contaminated water.
