Wat Chak Daeng Community Pavilion

OUR STORY
In late-2019, we learned about Wat Chak Daeng, a temple in Bang Kachao doing incredible work through its mission of practicing and teaching waste management with the surrounding community. One of its programs (among many) includes collecting recyclable plastic bottles and turning them into monk robes. Learn more by watching this video.
We immediately wanted to explore how we might be able to support the work of Wat Chak Daeng and the group of visionary monks and volunteers involved. Going into a meeting with two of the temple’s head monks, they told us that, while they have built what many consider to be an impressive waste collection and upcycling program, their real goal is to also give back to the surrounding community. He told us that what the community most desires is a shaded area for one of the most important functions of the temple, hosting funeral ceremonies.
And from there, the idea of the Pavilion was born.

WHAT IS THE WAT CHAK DAENG PAVILION?
The vision for the pavilion is to design and build a structure based on the needs of the community, and to reduce the footprint of the construction by making innovative use of recycled materials such as milk cartons and styrofoam. The pavilion will be able to seat up to 200 people, will connect people to an existing crematorium and sala, utilizes Eco-Boards, and incorporates solar panels to power lighting and fans.

Goal number one of the pavilion is to provide a vital community space to a needy group of people. Goal number two is that through beautiful design, the pavilion will simultaneously provide a useful and cherished space, while also telling a story that raises awareness about waste management and reduction with the public.

WHY DO WE NEED YOUR DONATIONS AND WHAT WILL YOU BE CONTRIBUTING TO?
Our own personal funding and time has allowed for the design and preliminary construction to begin, and about 60% of the project is already funded. We have also received donations from a few friends and contacted a number of Thai corporations to seek additional funding but have only received a limited amount of support. Therefore, in order to keep the project on track, we still need funding for the roughly remaining 40% of the project. That’s where you come in!
For every 360,000 Baht (roughly 12,000 USD) we fundraise, one of the below Phases 4-6 will be fully funded, meaning we need a total of 36,000 USD.
What is already funded:
Phase 1: Foundation – Clearing the site grounds and foundation piling
Phase 2: Structure – Main steel structural elements
Phase 3: Roof Structure and Panels – Roof structural elements and Eco-Boards roof paneling
What your donations will cover:
Phase 4: Ceiling – Eco-Boards roof installation, louvered ceiling, and electrical wiring
Phase 5: Fixtures – Lighting, fans and painting work
Phase 6: Finishing – Landscaping, solar panels, stormwater installation, and exterior shading
THANK YOU!
If you would like more information, please contact us below and we are more than happy to share further project details. Also, please help spread the word!
Finally, as the project progresses, we will update you with progress reports so you can see the way your money is being put to good use.
Thank you so much for reading about our project, and to everyone who donates, thank you so much for making it happen!
