Warmth for Quad Cities' Unsheltered This Winter

It is estimated that 400 to 600 people experience homelessness in the Quad Cities area (KWQC, 2019). When the cold months strike, many without access to shelter get exposed to the harsh winter weather, putting them at risk for hypothermia and frostbite. These conditions have long-term effects that can result in nerve damage, amputation, frostbite, arthritis, and musculoskeletal damage (Cleveland Clinic, 2023).

To help individuals in our community who lack shelter, we aim to lend portable propane heaters. We are modeling this idea after an initiative in Des Moines, IA, by the Joppa organization’s Winter Heat Team.

Through your generous donations, we will purchase 10 Mr. Buddy Portable Propane Heaters, 20 lb. propane tanks, and 12” hoses to attach the two. These heaters are safer than other models as they can be used in tents and automatically turn off if knocked over. Since shelter space is limited, these heaters will be necessary for the survival for those forced to live outside in the cold months.
