I never imagined I’d wake up in the middle of the night to a house fire. What started as what I believed was a small, contained situation quickly spiraled out of control. In a matter of minutes, everything changed. The fire left both me and a disabled family friend displaced with nowhere to go, and we’ve spent the last several weeks living out of a hotel, trying to navigate the shock, the loss, and the overwhelming instability that followed.
The emotional toll of managing this crisis has been heavy. I made the difficult decision to leave my full-time job so I could fully support the person in my care and make sure both of our emotional needs were met during this incredibly stressful time. Caregiving while rebuilding your own life is a kind of strength no one prepares you for.
Starting over is hard for anyone, but doing it while carrying the weight of responsibility for someone else makes the challenges feel even bigger. The fire forced me out of my comfort zone and pushed me to confront something I’ve spent most of my life avoiding — vulnerability. Asking for help is not easy for me, but I’m learning that sometimes it’s necessary.
Because of the fire, I had to leave behind all of my clothing, shoes, and personal belongings. Now, with winter here, I’m struggling to find warm clothing and shoes that will get me through the season. Any support — no matter the size — would make a meaningful difference as I work to get back on my feet.
Thank you so much for reading my story. Your whole world can change overnight, and this experience has reminded me how important it is to lean on community when life takes an unexpected turn. I’m deeply grateful for your kindness, your time, and any help you may be able to offer.
❤️
