A New Chapter for the Seven Sisters Market: Help Build Your Community Space

After a successful 20-year campaign, the Wards Corner Community Benefit Society is making the first steps of our community plan a reality and reopening the historic Seven Sisters Market (also known as Latin Village or Pueblito Paisa) after 5 years since it closed its doors.
As part of the temporary market, delivered by Places for London to rehouse all historic traders, we are opening a community space open to all to learn, make connections, access services and build the future of Wards Corner together.
The Seven Sisters Market was a place where migrant communities found jobs and a place to stay, but also solace and warmth far away from home. It was a place to learn, play and celebrate. We want the community space to continue this legacy.
From the very beginning, we want our communities to shape our space. We are organising a community build with our long-term collaborators, Unit38 - get in touch here to be involved!
Help us build our new community space!
The community space, open 5 days a week, will act as a local living room for Tottenham residents and migrant and minoritised communities across London. Throughout the whole year, it will be a warm space, an open resource open to all. The space will provide:
- Business Support and Skills Development: Helping local traders, entrepreneurs, and young people build sustainable businesses, offering resources, training, and mutual aid.
- Family Support and Childcare: Drawing from the historic Market’s legacy, we will continue being a welcoming and supportive space for families, offering space for childcare, meet-ups and learning.
- Culture & Creativity: We will host exhibitions, workshops, and cross-cultural events open to all. In September, we will be working with our communities on the launch of an archival project, ‘Market Tales’, to celebrate the unique history of the market.
- Urban Room: A space for continuing to build the vision of the future of Wards Corner and Tottenham, learning about retrofit with bio-based materials, and seed activity that can grow into a permanent home in the wider site.
- Sustainability Hub and Repair Café: Promoting circular economy values by creating a volunteer-run repair café, sharing skills across generations and reducing waste while bringing people together.
- Event Space for Celebrations: A space to host community celebrations, dinners, dances, music and film screenings to bring people together and build intergenerational connections.
- Community Organising and Advocacy: We won the fight to save Latin Village from private development- But the work doesn’t stop there! The space will allow us to continue to meet, organise and ensure a community-led regeneration, and advocate for fairer systems in Tottenham and beyond.
Why We Need Your Support:
Now, more than ever, we need safe spaces for migrant communities to feel a sense of belonging and ownership. A place for traders, families, and individuals from all backgrounds to connect, learn, and grow.
Over the past decades, we’ve been donating thousands of hours of our time and energy to this project, one that wouldn’t have been successful without its volunteers.
Now, we have a single paid employee supporting our activities, which already makes a huge difference.
We are actively fundraising and developing a community shares model to secure more funds, but these efforts take longer to deliver than our immediate needs allow.
We need your help now to make the space we all need in Tottenham. Be part of a project led by the community.
Where your money will go:
- Setting up the space – £5,000
We want to build our space together – using recycled materials, upcycled furniture and curtains designed and made by the community, we will build a warm, welcoming space that reflects the culture and creativity of Seven Sisters.
- Keeping it running – £2,000
It takes around £1,000/month to cover essentials like bills, cleaning, internet, and insurance. Your contribution helps us launch with everything we need to provide a clean, safe, and well-equipped community hub while we secure longer-term funding.
- Supporting local youth volunteers – £2,000
We want to build and run this space with community members - who deserve to be compensated for their hard work! We're committed to valuing our local youth volunteers by paying them the London Living Wage for their time.
- Tea, coffee & snacks – £500
Every great space runs on good conversation – which requires great snacks! We’ll be a welcoming space where the community can share food as well as ideas.
- Spreading the word – £500
Help us let the local community know this space is here for everyone in Seven Sisters to enjoy together. We’ve allocated a budget to spread the word and ensure it’s accessible to all!
This initiative is not just about preserving the market—it’s about creating a model of community wealth-building that can be replicated all over London. Join us in making this vision a reality.
Thank you for your support! We can’t wait to see you at our new space and keep growing as a community.
