As some of you may know I was diagnosed with Bi-lateral breast cancer in 2023 following a routine mammogram in April of that year. Part of my treatment involved travelling to Weston Park hospital for radiotherapy which they don’t do in Doncaster as the machines are huge so there is no space in DRI. The thought of travelling to Sheffield seemed a bit daunting at first .. How would I get there? .. Where would I park? What if I didn't feel up to driving after my treatment ?
My breast cancer nurse recommended I contact Firefly Cancer awareness and support.
Firefly is a Doncaster based non-profit making charity providing free transport to patients from the Doncaster borough who need cancer treatment in Sheffield. Every penny they have donated goes directly back in to keeping their fleet of vehicles on the road. Their Vehicles are also all driven by volunteers and it takes away the stress and financial implications of travelling between the two cities. Firefly would pick me up from the house, take me to Weston Park and drop me off back home again. This was an invaluable service which would not be available without this charity.
As a Thank you to Firefly on the 16th August this year myself, my son Felix, and some friends (Angie, Sarah and Kate) are taking part in the Firefly Wallython which involves walking from Weston Park Hospital in Sheffield back to the Salutation in Doncaster (which is around 20 miles) all while dressed as a "Wheres Wally?" to raise money to benefit Firefly.
Any donation received will help make an impact. Thanks in advance for your contribution to this cause that means so much to me.
Love Claire xx
