Walking the Length of Spain
Donation protected
On April 20th I will be walking the length from Cheltenham to Almuñécar, following the famed route taken by Laurie Lee in 1934-36. I will be following Lee’s route as closely as is practical, walking through Slad, Lee’s hometown, down through the South West of England into Portsmouth. At this juncture Lee took his route along the Southern British coast and up into London, before taking a ferry to Vigo, Spain. I instead shall be taking the ferry from Portsmouth to Santander, where I will catch a bus to Vigo to begin the Spanish portion of Lee’s trip, following in his footsteps through Spain over three months.
This will take me through Zamora, Valladolid, Segovia, Madrid, Toledo, Valdepeñas, Guadalquivir, Seville, Cádiz, Gibraltar, Málaga, ending in Almuñécar. Please see maps below for my intended route, all on foot, and sleeping in my tent, or in hostels where they exist.
I am doing this walk in aid of the Spanish charity Association for the Recovery of Historical Memory, which conducts work to identify, exhume and bury those that died during the Spanish Civil, having identified over 1,500 victims of Francoism since 2000.
I will also be raising money for International Brigade Memorial Trust which works in the UK for preservation of graves and memory of Britons who fought in the Spanish Civil War.
Please see below maps of my trip, donations of all sizes welcome! All funds will be split equally between the two charities.
