Walk for Gary – Supporting Willow’s Cancer Care

This year, for Gary’s birthday, we wanted to do something meaningful. Gary is now in the late stages of Dementia and has recently been diagnosed with prostate cancer. Though he now struggles to walk more than a few steps, his generous spirit and sense of community remain strong.

Back in 2000, Gary helped set up Willow’s Cancer Care, a local charity that has supported countless families affected by cancer. Over the years, Gary took part in every fundraiser he could, clocking up hundreds of miles in walks and runs, including an incredible 273km in 30 days, back in 2021. Now that he can no longer take part the way he used to, we want to carry the torch for him.

So, on Sunday, August 3rd at 3pm, we’re inviting Gary’s friends, family, and anyone in the community to join us for a 5km walk through Poppintree Park-a place full of special memories for Gary, where he goes everyday. We’ll be walking in honour of Gary, but more importantly, in aid of Willow’s Cancer Care, to help them continue the incredible work they do supporting people affected by cancer.

We would love for as many people as possible to not only join us on the walk, with Gary coming along in his wheelchair but also to consider getting sponsored individually to raise even more for the charity. Whether you walk for Gary, for someone you love, or simply to support the cause, we’d be so grateful to have you with us. We are hoping Gary can walk the last few steps himself.

Gary always said, “We have to look after each other.” This is our chance to do just that.
