OUR LAST CHANCE TO SAVE HEATH COMMON AS WE KNOW IT!
SAVE Wakefield’s Memories and PROTECT its Future.
Please help us to SAVE Heath Common from an Industrial Battery Energy Storage Plan - we are raising funds for planning and heritage experts to defend this historic landscape at the planning Public Inquiry in November 2025.
It’s hard to find someone from Wakefield who doesn’t have at least one happy memory of Heath Common. The green lung of Wakefield: home to the Easter Fair, Kite Festival, Old Hall ruins, Morris Dancing, pints at The Kings Arms, Skinny Living gigs on the Common, and too many ghost stories to list! These memories are embedded in our very DNA and make us who we are.
The next generation may not be so lucky… London/Harrogate based Harmony Energy want to install 72 shipping container sized lithium-ion batteries on this historic greenbelt land and build a heavy goods vehicle access road across Heath Common and the Old Hall landscape. This industrialisation will bring noise pollution, fire risk, and irreparable harm to this historic landscape.
Heath Common is a haven of tranquillity, somewhere to escape when you need to clear your head or get some peace. It’s a popular family destination and an established meeting spot for friends. It’s Wakefield’s little piece of historic England - all just a stone’s throw away from the loud and busy city.
Get YOUR name written in tomorrow’s history books
Anyone who donates and leaves their name will have their name entered into a book that will be kept securely in Heath village for the future - whatever happens, we will ensure that history will remember those who stood up for Heath in its hour of need.
How we ended up here…
Although Wakefield Council’s Planning Committee unanimously REFUSED the industrial BESS plan in July, the developer has APPEALED the decision directly to the Government’s Planning Inspectorate who will now decide whether to let it go ahead, or uphold the council’s decision to refuse.
This means Heath Residents’ Association now faces a large bill to fund planning and heritage experts to take our fight to defend this historic green space at the Public Inquiry which will start in November.
Thousands of people across the district and beyond enjoy this very special place, the jewel in Wakefield’s crown, and we will ensure that their voices are heard at the Inquiry.
Any support you are able to offer to help us achieve this would be greatly appreciated - we are doing this for Wakefield’s next generation - they deserve to make the happy memories we have all made at Heath.
THANK YOU for the huge support you have offered our campaign over the past three years. The fight to defend this special place has entered the final round - it is now or never.
