Bringing Clean Water and Sustainable Agriculture to Homabay County!

Who We Are

Wable is a non-profit organization dedicated to tackling the water crisis and agricultural challenges faced by communities in Homabay County, Kenya. Our mission is to connect water, soil, and people .

THE CHALLENGE
In Homabay County, the average distance to a fresh water source is currently 7 km. The lack of access to clean drinking water is compounded by deforestation and climate change, which impact livelihoods and food supplies. Monoculture farming practices exacerbate challenges during droughts and floods, making the situation even more dire.

THE SOLUTION
We are implementing a comprehensive approach that combines decentralized drinking water services with regenerative agriculture. By 2026, we aim to benefit 18,600 people by improving access to clean and safe drinking water and stabilizing agricultural productivity. Our initiative focuses on improving water cycles and enhancing farmer livelihoods.

How We'll Achieve It
1. Build Decentralized Drinking Water Containers: Construct containers equipped with water treatment and distribution systems, fully powered by solar energy. We will train the local community in the operation and maintenance of these systems, ensuring sustainability and self-reliance.

2. Establish a Model Farm: Showcase best practices in regenerative agriculture, empowering local farmers to implement sustainable systems on their own land. These farms will serve as dynamic learning hubs, demonstrating environmentally-friendly farming techniques.

3. Raise Awareness and Education: Through capacity building, we will conduct awareness-raising activities and events on water and environmental-related topics. This will help foster a deeper understanding of sustainable practices among community members.

Intervention

We will build decentralized drinking water containers by constructing fully equipped units with water treatment and distribution systems, powered by solar energy. This community-based approach combines awareness-raising activities with education on water and environmental-related topics, training locals to maintain and operate the systems independently.

Impact

1. Health: Provide clean and safe drinking water, reducing waterborne diseases.
2. Inspirational: Serve as a learning hub for local farmers, promoting best practices in regenerative agriculture.
3. Environmental: Improve soil health, foster biodiversity, and reduce single-use plastic through drinking water refill stations.
4. Social: Increase access to clean drinking water and enhance food security.
5. Economic: Stabilize yields against climate change, boost agricultural productivity, stimulate economic vibrancy, and create local job opportunities.

Why Donate

Your contribution will directly support the construction of decentralized water containers and the establishment of model farms. Help us address the water crisis in Kenya and promote sustainable agriculture in East Africa. Support our
efforts to provide clean water access, sustainable agriculture, and community development.

Background
Wable approaches the drinking water challenge holistically by connecting water, soil, and people. Since our founding in 2019 by a team of passionate artists, entrepreneurs, educators, and scientists, we have realized two drinking water points in western Kenya. Our initiatives in the Netherlands and Kenya aim to share knowledge, skills, and experiences to create global awareness about the importance of clean and safe drinking water and the impact of climate change.

About the Area
80% of the population in Homabay County lives in villages, often 7 km away from a drinking water source despite being near Lake Victoria. We aim to reduce this distance to 3 km within five years, offering high-quality drinking water. Our project supports local fishing communities by building decentralized drinking water points on Lake Victoria's Beach Units.

Community and Self-Reliance
Our project enables local communities to independently manage and maintain water points through training and awareness activities. By bringing clean drinking water closer to people, especially women and girls who typically fetch water, we save time and improve health. The water points also stimulate local economic activities, from ice making for fishing to increased agricultural productivity.

Local Initiative
The project was initiated by Odak, born and raised in Homabay, and Saskia, who lived in Kenya for over 10 years. Together with community-based organizations and youth/women groups, they have implemented projects in education, fishing, tree planting, and drinking water supply since 2012. The local team in Kenya leads the implementation, supported by the Wable Foundation in the Netherlands through fundraising, technical knowledge, and hardware contributions.

Join Us
Together, we can create lasting change. Donate today to help us implement decentralized water containers and empower local farmers with regenerative agricultural techniques. Let's combat the drinking water challenge, droughts, floods, and the challenges of monoculture farming, transforming lives in Kenya!

Thank you for your goodwill and support. Your contribution will make a significant impact on the lives of many in Homabay County. Your support is crucial to starting these transformative projects. Act now to make a tangible difference!
