WHY FUND THIS CAMPAIGN? I have always loved being outdoors. When I was younger I remember making mud pies in my grandparents front yard, and picking cucumbers, cantaloupe, and tomatoes off the few plants right in the garden bed next to the house. But one thing that my family never really did was hike and camp. Even to this day my grandmother still questions how "I'm not scared going into the woods."
In 2014, I had the opportunity to participate in a National Science Foundation internship at the University of Montana working with the forestry department doing field research. Boy was my vision of what nature had to offer changed for the better. However, I was ill prepared. I arrived with little gear, but thankfully the grant that supported my experience helped to provide much of my needed supplies; gear that I still cherish and use to this day. As much as, I'd like to hope that all black families could acquire needed materials without thinking about the financial burden, I know that is not the case for most.
I believe that everyone has the right to enjoy public parks and spaces without limitations and barriers. If this effort provides an opportunity for even one family, I will be satisfied with its purpose.
This is the Wish List of outdoor recreational gear that hopefully will serves as a baseline of the gear selected for each family. In addition each family will be receiving an annual park pass of their choice.
All funds will be used to buy outdoor recreation gear and pay shipping to selected families.
Thank you kindly for your support!
If you would like gear for your family, please submit a request via this Google Form. Submitting a request is not a guarantee that you will receive gear. Gear will be allocated based on the amount of money raised through the GoFundMe campaign until funds are exhausted.
